Travel Bug

I was bitten by the travel bug at a young age. I like the adventure of going somewhere new. If money were no object, my husband and I would pack up our family and travel the world. Well, at least to the more popular, more developed parts of it; we’re not that adventurous.

I’ve always wanted to drive across the United States. I had the opportunity several years ago but couldn’t find a traveling companion – no one had the luxury of time that I did then. I regret not going because I don’t see that opportunity happening again anytime soon. I regret that I didn’t pursue that dream when I had a chance. I regret that I let fear hold me back.

I recently started reading The Unexpected Circumnavigation about a couple who spent two years traveling the world by boat – you can see how I was intrigued by the premise. Here was a couple who combined their dreams – she wanted to travel the world, he wanted to live on a boat – and went after it. I admire their gumption. And I admire that they didn’t just chase after their dreams, they pursued them with passion and a plan.

Perhaps one day I’ll drive across the country or backpack through Europe (probably not) but in the meantime, I’m ok with the small adventures I take with my family. I’ll keep dreaming about the places we want to go and maybe one day we will.

Where in the world would you like to go?

As a member of the From Left to Write Book Club, I received a copy of the book for free. This post is not intended as a review.

  1. I’ve done a lot of road trips with hubby before we had kids. It was so much fun! I hope you get to drive across the US soon.

    • I love road trips! I think it reminds me of childhood trips from Maryland to Disney World. We always took our time getting there and checking out the places along the way.

  2. Driving across the country appeals to me, too. It would be an adventure that’s not too scary.

    • I think there’s a lot of beautiful — and diverse — places to see in this country. Hopefully one day I will.

  3. My parents give me a lot of hope for life after kids. They spend at least a month a year traveling.

  4. Europe! I want to backpack through Europe!

    • That would be so much fun! But I think my days of staying in hostels are way over. The older I gets the more “comforts” I want when I travel.

  5. As a direct result of reading this book (and the movie Coral Reef Adventures, which I coincidentally saw recently) I’m saving in earnest for a family trip to Fiji. Which is funny because I get nervous driving as far as the next city, 45 minutes away. But now, I’ve been inspired to dream big.
