It’s day 8 of NaNoWriMo and I’m still at 3,015 words. My average daily word count is shrinking by the, er, day.
I’ve been following other WriMos on Twitter and watching their word counts exceed 10,000. Even my NaNoWriMo writing buddies have written more words than me.
They are leaving me in their word count dust!
I knew at the beginning I probably wouldn’t write 50,000 words. My goal instead was to write every day.
Yeah, that hasn’t happened.
Blame wanting to sleep in, the time change, a cold, whatever. Its not happening.
But I’m not discouraged.
I know that I can crank out 1,000 words an hour if I really put fingertips to keyboard. I know that I can find an hour each day to write. I know that if I made the effort NaNoWriMo could be mine!
Alas, I don’t think it will be. I don’t mean to be pessimistic. I’m just being realistic. That’s just who I am.
I also know that I’m a very careful, concise writer. It goes against my nature to spew words onto the screen. I love writing but sometimes its a painful process for me. And that’s probably why I’ve shied away from my goal of writing a novel.
I don’t want to shy away from it anymore.
So, I’ll keep going and hope that by November 30 I’m no longer afraid and that I’m working on my novel an hour each day.
Are you participating in NaNoWriMo? How’s it going for you? What’s your word count?
You can do it!
Thanks writing buddy!
Keep plugging and don’t be so hard on yourself! Write as much as you’re comfortable writing. Once you get a pattern going it will be easier I’m sure.
Keep going, you can do it. 🙂

Thanks for the encouragement! Hope NaNoWriMo is going well for you.
Hi, writing buddy! Thank you for writing this piece as it is sooooooo what I’ve been thinking/feeling too. Your careful, concise writing and not liking just throwing words up on a screen (or down on a page) describes me, too, and it really bugs me to write things and not edit them. Like reeeeeally bothers me.
The biggest problem I’m facing is not knowing which path to go down. I’ve got about three different book ideas in my head and only one of them is a true novel and, you know what?, I just don’t think it’s ready to be told yet … if it ever will. So, when I sit down to write I’m like, “Hmmmm … where am I headed off to today? I know! I’ll make some banana bread instead!” I think it’s my muse’s way of saying she needs a more manageable creative task with definite tangible results. What do you think? 😉

That is exactly me! I didn’t create an outline so I’ve just been winging it. When I sit down to write, it feels forced. I’m following one story line while the ideas for other novels are swirling in my head. I am enjoying the character development, though. I’m having fun getting to know them.
P.S. My muse likes to bake, too. 🙂
